General Meeting - January, 2005

Dr. Farrand gave an in-depth presentation on the journeys and geology findings of both Mars Exploration Rovers (MER). The talk was highly interesting and interactive, with numerous questions fielded. The MER mission continues to revolutionize our understanding of Mars surface geology, and the presentation can't be readily summarized in these meeting notes. We will ask Dr. Farrand to make his Powerpoint presentation available to RMMS members on-line.

Next, we discussed the current RMMS presidential situation. We don't have any nominees yet, so we decided to temporarily distribute the functions of the president amongst the other members as follows:

  • Website updates: Brian Enke
  • Running monthly meetings: Dewey Anderson w/ Farin as backup
  • A/V equipment & room scheduling: Ray McCall
  • Chapter Contact: Brian Enke (no change)
  • Meeting notices: Dewey Anderson and Brian Enke
  • Speaker coordination: Dewey Anderson.

Since Dewey will be coordinating speakers, please contact him with your suggestions. Members will attempt to contact Bruce Jakowski, Steven Lee, and Jen Heldmann as potential speakers.

Brad Jarvis alerted us about some potential problems with renewing RMMS' status as a state-recognized non-profit organization. Several members are looking into the current situation.

A discussion about 2005 RMMS priorities included speakers (above), the upcoming Mars Society conference in Boulder, and rejuvenating the CU student chapter. Regarding the conference, Brian will contact headquarters to find out what discounts and incentives are available for conference organization volunteers. We will consider holding special events that might be of greater interest to students, like pizza parties, special guest speakers, campus flier advertisements, etc.

As the clock passed 10:00 (ouch), we decided to adjourn. We will probably continue the discussion on RMMS priorities at the next meeting. Please send e-mail to the Chapter Contact (Brian at brian.enke@att.net) if you would like to offer feedback or suggestions about RMMS goals.

One final note - the door to the Environmental Design building was set on auto-lock, so we started the meeting late to avoid some members getting locked out. In the future, Ray McCall will bring his cell phone to the meetings. If you are ever locked out of the building, please call Ray at 303-564-2536. If you don't have a cell phone with you, just wait... usually plenty of students are around with door keys.
